Illuminated by the glow of candles and the soft stirring of light in the palm of his hand, an aging wizard surprises himself with the discovery of new arcane knowledge. The light in his eyes reflects the spell he’s tapped into as much as an inner excitement at his discovery.
This drawing began as a simple way to depict a classic wizard in his study poring over dusty tomes and relics in search of some forgotten piece of knowledge. But as I worked on it, I couldn’t help but draw a comparison to artists and musicians, locking themselves away in solitude, experimenting and reading through books in search of information that could be the key to their next breakthrough.
Also, as I was drawing I realized the image was quite similar to the cover of Lord Lovidicus’ album, The Forges Fire. Musically, it isn’t one of LL’s better recordings (see Wandervogel des Waldes and Kyndill og Steinn instead), though I love the artwork for it and it must have subconsciously worked its way into my mind. I briefly thought about altering my drawing, but instead embraced the similarity and allowed my creation to be a sort of homage to that painting.
