Mesmerized by the angler’s external eyeball, the young aquanaut abruptly found himself unable to move. Simultaneously enthralled and horrified, he could feel the creature’s slick tongue working its way inextricably up his arm, pulling him inch by agonizing inch toward its gaping maw. He had come to the depths to embrace new experiences, and in his final moments, he realized those experiences had embraced him instead.
Some of the most horrifying creatures on Earth live in the ocean, and I wanted to do something slightly comical with the beloved and phobia-inducing anglerfish. Because the angler, like many other fish living in the watery depths, looks more like an extraterrestrial than anything found on Earth, I chose to conflate ocean and outer space a bit by creating a bug-eyed, astronaut-like man with a raygun and putting him underwater with an (only slightly!) embellished version of an angler.
The clean lines and open art style of this drawing are meant to give it a cartoon flair that contrasts with the horror the aquanaut faces at his underwater assailant.
