Everyday 016 – Salty Dog

Nestled amid the dockside storehouses and piled cargo, a low-slung tavern is home to an assortment of personalities, from young entertainers and harrowed servers to the salty dogs of the sea. Merry with the security of dry land and the fermented drink taking hold of his head, one particularly hardy sailor lets out a laugh between each drink and raises his tankard to reflect his rising mirth.

I felt like mixing things up a bit with Salty Dog and shifting away from the fantasy tropes I’ve been predominately working with in these everyday drawings. Instead of creating a character who belongs explicitly in a fantasy realm, I embraced the idea of a person who could exist in a fictional world or at many points in the history of our own reality.

Setting aside the thick, hatch-free linework of drawings like Midsummer and The King is Dead, I chose tools for this drawing that could produce thinner, sharper lines and used them to lay on hatching lines and texture marks that reflect the salty dog’s gritty character and spirited state of mind.

My everyday drawings are available for sale in my Big Cartel shop each morning at 11 am EST. For the first 100 days, each new drawing increases in price by $1.00, starting at $1.00 on day one. Everyday 016 – Salty Dog is listed at $16.00.
