In the not-so-distant future of 1987, a pair of robotic sentries patrol the rubble of what was once a gleaming city, seeking to eliminate all remaining traces of human life. Their mission has been highly successful.
Committing myself to 100 drawings in 100 days has been the best creative choice I’ve made in my life. After years of not drawing with any level of frequency or regularity, the firm work schedule has forced me to push through a lot of ideas and drawing techniques rapidly.
Although I didn’t realize it at the time, this Sentries drawing was an important turning point in that process. I’d been happily making these types of comic-book-flavored fantasy and sci-fi drawings since I began my everydays, but by the time I finished inking Sentries, I realized my heart wasn’t in it any more.
In the past, I made darker, more surrealistic work, and I expected my drawings would move back in that direction at some point. Sentries helped me realize it was time to make that shift. This is one of the last few drawings that has this style of open linework and grounded environmental details that had been mostly consistent through the first quarter of my everydays.
My everyday drawings are available for sale in my Big Cartel shop each morning at 11 am EST. For the first 100 days, each new drawing increases in price by $1.00, starting at $1.00 on day one. Everyday 021 – Sentries is listed at $21.00.
